Limitarianism:
The second thing limitarianism requires is that we reduce class seg-regation. We must do so because it will directly help to restore and nurture democracy, in particular democratic citizenship. Class integration creates a culture of empathy for people from different walks of life and generates more opportunities for cross-class friendship. It is easy to vote for a neoliberal government that will impose austerity measures on the most vulnerable if you don't know any poor or vulnerable people, and believe that they are poor because they are lazy, or that they have somehow blown the opportunities that society may have given them.
I think this is overlooked. This is my best guess as to why some guys I worked with thought that poor people are too dumb to figure out how to make sandwiches and so pay Subway instead.
Math circle and judo have gotten us to know a much wider variety of people than private music classes, as you might expect. It’s been good for the guy. It’s another reason, besides the general fragility of private school kids, to not send kids to private school.
The book goes on to say that this should be done by the government, rather than being something you can opt into. People avoid class mixing all the time. Mandatory civil service would help a lot with this.
