Around the 20-minute mark in this episode of Past, Present, Future, Lea Ypi pointed out that the what I think of as “religious” free trade is derived from viewing property rights as unquestionable. If you have a right to property, then you have a right to do whatever you want with your property, including trading it, or using it to force other people to do things to stay on it (in the case of land), and to refuse to let the state take any of it (in the case of money). Piketty also made this point, but over the course of hundreds of pages instead of in a few sentences.
