I definitely did not feel like I was improving at judo tonight. I threw a few times with osotogari and once with tani otoshi. No forward throws whatsoever. A few attempts, though.
However, I did do five rounds of newaza randori and three rounds of standing. Absolutely dying by the end, but still moving and trying stuff. So, that is actually an endurance improvement, if not a technical one.
One thing I really appreciated while we were working on escapes from kesa gatame is that the sensei straight up acknowledged that it's a strength thing. I asked if there was another way to get out if the pin is tight, and he just said no, your bridging just is not strong enough.
In judo, there usually is a technical way to make something happen that requires less strength than the intuitive way. That's the whole point of it! So, people are hesitant to say "you just need more strength" because they want to discourage muscling through something that that could be done more efficiently. But strength always helps, and very occasionally, something cannot be done with some minimum amount of strength. Bridging out of kesa gatame is one of those things (and it is your only choice if it's locked in solidly), and it was nice to hear no ambiguity about that.
