Also, I had a bunch of thoughts about the Trump essay in the Rebecca Solnit book, but for time's sake, they boil down to this: I'm not sure her assumption that Trump is being defeated by being hated is correct. I'm not sure she's incorrect, either.
It's true that the presidency isn't what he expected and that he would prefer to be admired and adored. However, he may be somewhat like his followers. They don't care that you loathe them; the important thing is that you give attention to them. A lot of them are well beyond expecting to be loved, and they just want to "own the libs"; to get a reaction. They're sort of like the company Twitter: Any sort of engagement counts as a win.
Again, Trump may not be like the neo-Nazi alt right in this regard. But he might be.
Incidentally, if you haven't read Rebecca Solnit's "Death by Gentrification" essay, you should. It's a really lucid look at the ways in which the privileged end up actually killing people.
