One of the few downsides of Black Lives Matter being everywhere is that, to a five-year-old, it’s just another phrase. Even if it’s been explained to you, it may not have sunk in.
I had to have a conversation with the guy about never saying “black lives matter” in a silly voice. I got too abruptly serious and scared him and will do a better job next time, but in the end, we got to a point at which he understood that “black lives matter” is talking about people being hurt unfairly. From there, it followed for him that we should not be silly about people who are hurt. So, it was very much worth talking about, even if I didn’t do a perfect job.
Later, he drew this. (In kindergarten, they don’t learn formal spelling. They use what’s called inventive spelling to spell words how they imagine words are spelled. It feels like something they can do that way.)
