This is why the "outsourcing" metaphor seems so right to me. The problem with outsourcing is not that it's involuntary. We can choose to outsource. And sometimes outsourcing makes good sense. It's quick and efficient. It lets us engage the power of external specialists and the efficiencies of scale. The whole point of looking at other people's reviews of, say, emergency flashlights is that the issue is complicated and technical and I really don't care all that much. So I can let some hardcore tech geek who actually loves flashlights do all the research for me and tell me what's best.
I think this value outsourcing idea might be in effect beyond value capture by metrics.
Why is MAGA dead set against military intervention and pro-starting wars with Iran the next? Why were they talking about inflation all the time in 2023 but not now, when it’s still the same?
They find it too hard to come up with their own values, other than racism. Their values are now just a pointer to Trump.
The same goes for the “A.I. is here to stay” people. There’s a lot to think about. What justifies the enormous amount of electricity being used? Why is the low quality of A.I. output being waved through? How are we going to deal with the content laundering? What is going to happen as a result of jobs eliminated with this new justification? What incentive does capital have to pour so much into it?
This is a lot to think about. Why not just go with what wealthy experts like Sam Altman and Steve Yegge think?
