Tom Cotton, who previously said that the US military should be used against US protestors in a foolishly-published New York Times op-ed,
called slavery a necessary evil. Further, he's trying to ban schools from mentioning the 1619 Project, the NY Times project documenting the history of the United States' involvement in slavery.
Nikole Hannah-Jones, who wrote the introduction to the 1619 Project, said:
"Imagine thinking a non-divisive curriculum is one that tells black children the buying and selling of their ancestors, the rape, torture, and forced labor of their ancestors for PROFIT, was just a ‘necessary evil’ for the creation of the ‘noblest’ country the world has ever seen."
