Way back in April, guided by experiences with adjustable height desks at work and stacks of boxes under my laptop at home, I thought a lot about a desk setup that would work for me at home. I concluded that I needed a surface that fit these dimensions:
- 30" w
- 12" d
- 36" h
I like to keep my keyboard on my lap, as it reduces tension on my forearms. I like to have my display much higher than my keyboard and lap, though, for the sake of my posture and back. (And then I need a small side table for mousing.)
For standing desk position, I could put the keyboard on that surface, then move the laptop to a surface that sat a foot above that.
I preferred a free-standing table with those dimensions, but had a lot of trouble finding existing furniture that size. I also didn't have the time to learn how to make that myself, even though I imagined it was in my reach. I had trouble finding local businesses that would make this for me.
Months later, I found three pieces of IKEA that were close to these dimensions. Excerpt for the side table, though, they were wall-attached. I ordered them, IKEA sent the wrong stuff, and I had to try hard on multiple channels to finally get them to send me what I ordered.
And then I had trouble finding time to put these things together and installing them. Well, I finally got the main piece in today!
It does indeed feel good, and saves a lot of space over the thing that was sitting there before, a shorter table that extended out an extra foot and had a bunch of boxes stacked on it.
I feel like I have a million long-running projects hanging over me, and it feels good to land one, even if it's just an IKEA installation.
