The new episode of Ear Hustle is about immigrant prisoners. Not only about them having a hard time in American prisons, but about ICE camping out to get them when their sentences complete, in order to take them to camps that have worse-than-prison living standards.
It's very focused in its scope. It does not ask larger questions. But they did include the opinions of a non-immigrant White prisoner who felt all undocumented immigrants should be deported. He kept talking about the "sacredness" of citizenship.
Perhaps this was intended by the producers, but it did make me think we need to do a lot to push back on the idea that there should be that great of a difference between citizens and non-citizens. If citizenship is sacred, why is it arbitrarily handed out to people born in a certain place? If the worship of citizenship is keeping us from treating people — including children — with basic human dignity, then it should be destroyed.
